Hey friends,
WELL—-I’ve been running around like a bat out of hell for the past few months. I got what I’ve wanted since I was 17—a full touring schedule. One of my favorite things about life on the road is that I’ve had a chance to share time and space with so many people as a result of making music. There are some mighty cool people roaming this earth. For those who have come out to the shows, it is an honor to entertain you and to borrow your ears. Thank you for listening and supporting. You inspire me.
This week my friend Matthew McGinn and I have been traversing the northeast U.S. playing at colleges. Being that he is a talented artist in his own right, he has been super-cool to join me on this tour—- backing me up, navigating, driving, and helping me maintain my sanity (which can be a challenge). He’s an ace. We had the day off today so we decided to tour the Magic Hat Brewery, the Original Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory, AND still managed to find time to hit a bucket of golf balls at the range. Fun is an understatement.
I was doing a little bit of math last night and I realized that I have only spent 27 days in Nashville (my home) since the New Year. I was pretty taken back by that. While I am so grateful to be a professional musician, and for all the things I’ve mentioned above and MORE—- I must admit that my body and soul are officially moving into “What, are you crazy?!?!” mode. There has got to be a more technical term for that…
Anyways, my experiences are helping me to appreciate the simple aspects of life that are short-changed by the nature of what I do. Things like being among people who know me and love me, living and sleeping in my own house, and walking down familiar streets. I’m also beginning to crave songwriting, recording, and engaging that whole side of my creative self again.
Being on the road has taught me a lot about who I am, who I want to be, who I don’t want to be, which hotel chains have high speed internet access and won’t charge you for parking, the integrity of Google maps, and above all, grace. It’s been a wild ride.
I just finished pacing up and down the hallway of the Days Inn talking on the phone with my friend Stephen Fryrear who floated some great wisdom my way. He said, “Usually you don’t know that you’re on a great adventure until it’s over. When you’re in the middle of it, your just thinking about how to get through it cause it’s scary. But once it’s done, you look back and marvel at where you came from.” That’s the good stuff right there.
Life is as rich. If you’re really living, it’s gonna be hard. Don’t hide from love—-you’re going to need it. Let’s keep going.
Thanks for checking in. You’re great.
Love,
Steve
